North Macedonia: A Journey of Growth and Reconciliation

North Macedonia is a dynamic nation with a rich cultural history and diverse communities. However, challenges such as social inequality and reconciliation persist. MindLeaps' work focuses on fostering unity and development by bridging gaps between communities, providing educational opportunities, and empowering children to overcome obstacles.

Protection

MindLeaps’ Protection Program in North Macedonia provides a safe and nurturing environment for children to develop their Social-emotional learning skills. Through our dance curriculum and mentorship, participants grow in the seven key Social-emotional skills evaluated by the program. In 2024, nearly 83 children participated in our program in Skopje, North Macedonia.

Partnership with SOS Children’s Village

In September 2023, MindLeaps relaunched its Protection activities in Skopje with a newly trained team of instructors and staff. Collaborating with SOS Children’s Village, the program began with a cohort of 26 children. This program culminated in a performance at the U.S. Embassy in Skopje. The event highlighted the growth in confidence, dance skills, and self-esteem from our students. Following the program, the cohort transitioned into an alumni group, continuing their dance education through regular classes at various studios across the country. This continuity ensures sustained growth and engagement.

Partnership with Sumnal - Association for Development of the Roma Community

In early 2024, MindLeaps formed a partnership with Sumnal to extend its Protection program to over 60 Roma youth. This collaboration provided these children with opportunities for artistic expression and growth, including a performance at the Skopje Creative Fest during the summer of 2024. This experience not only celebrated their progress but also fostered a sense of accomplishment and community pride.

Alumni Groups

MindLeaps Skopje has established multiple alumni groups, comprised of top-performing students from each cohort. Selection criteria include a strong interest in dance and a willingness to pursue advanced training. Alumni from SOS and Sumnal cohorts have had the privilege of participating in advanced dance classes with guest instructors, studio sessions, and performances at prestigious events. These experiences enrich their skills and deepen their connection to the arts.

Education

The Education Program in North Macedonia is one of MindLeaps’ longest-standing initiatives, continuously evolving to meet the needs of youth. From virtual academies to masterclasses and language courses, the program complements the Protection Program, adhering to MindLeaps’ goal of holistic growth for all children. The Education Program serves a diverse group, including Protection program alumni, other former participants, and new beneficiaries.

English Program at Sumnal

Top-performing alumni from the Protection Program were integrated into a pilot Education Program through an English language course. These weekly introductory English lessons culminated in a showcase of their skills at MindLeaps’ 10th Anniversary Celebration in Skopje, where students confidently presented in English. This pilot program has further sparked an interest in the community for other language programs to be implemented in the future.

DARE Program

In 2024, the DARE (Depolarization Activism for Resilient Europe) Program was initiated in partnership with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) and led by MindLeaps’ International Coordinator for the Balkans, Tanja Raic Tarcuki. This initiative trained seven instructors on key topics such as Civic Engagement and Disinformation. These instructors now conduct educational sessions in high schools across North Macedonia, equipping youth with critical knowledge on the importance and challenges of civic participation and media literacy.

Master Classes

To engage the wider community and alumni, MindLeaps Skopje has organized Masterclasses on various topics, including Mental Health and Excel skills. These sessions have been instrumental in re-engaging alumni, raising awareness about MindLeaps’ work, and expanding the organization’s network in the country. Masterclasses provide participants with practical skills and insights that enhance their personal and professional development.

Youth Alumni Network and Community Engagement

The Youth Alumni Network plays a vital role in MindLeaps’ commitment to ongoing support and development of former participants. Alumni are encouraged to engage in community activities, mentor younger participants, and hone their leadership skills. Through this network, alumni have organized diverse community events and social initiatives, such as trivia nights and hiking trips. These activities foster a sense of belonging, empowerment, and continued growth.
