Twelve-year-old Rukundo Mcquinn is in Grade Seven and lives with his grandmother in Katwe Musoke Zone, Kampala. He enjoys playing football with his friends when he is not at school.

Before joining MindLeaps, Rukundo spent much of his time helping his grandmother with household chores and fetching water. He often missed school because she could not afford to pay his school fees on time. Rukundo dreamed of becoming a cardiologist, but the interruptions to his education made it difficult for him to keep up with his studies and pursue that goal.

Two friends who attended MindLeaps introduced him to the program, and he joined in 2024. Rukundo felt welcomed by the teachers from his first day. Tutoring helped him build confidence in his schoolwork, while computer lessons taught him how to research homework and use technology for learning.

Today, Rukundo says he is doing better in Science and feels more confident working with others. He remains focused on his dream of becoming a cardiologist so he can help people with heart conditions. For Rukundo, education is a path toward that future.

Growing up in Cité de la Solidarité in Ratoma, Conakry, Kerfala Sanoh faced significant challenges from an early age. After losing his mother, he was raised by his father and grew up with limited opportunities. In 2017, Kerfala joined MindLeaps Guinea, where he later became part of our school sponsorship program and began a pathway toward completing his education.

That journey was not always easy. In 2024, Kerfala sat for the Baccalaureate examination to complete high school, but he did not pass. Determined to continue, he tried again in 2025 but was again unsuccessful.

Showing his grit and discipline skills, Kerfala did not allow this to end his educational ambitions: he found another way forward. In 2026, Kerfala enrolled in vocational training in telecommunications while preparing to try to pass the Baccalaureate exam for a third time. His determination paid off: Kerfala successfully passed the Baccalaureate this June and is now officially a high school graduate – after a 9 year educational journey with MindLeaps.

Kerfala is thriving beyond his school diploma. He teaches Math at the MindLeaps Center to help children who are striving to follow the same path as him. He has developed his entrepreneurial skills by creating KSF Express Delivery, a delivery business that he manages to help cover his daily living costs.
